Common Dental Emergencies We See

What counts as urgent.

Call us for any of the situations below — we'll help you figure out next steps.

Significant or Worsening Tooth Pain

Pain that's severe, persistent, or getting worse over hours or days is worth calling about rather than waiting out.

Broken or Cracked Teeth

A chipped, cracked, or fractured tooth should be evaluated, even if it isn't painful yet.

Lost or Damaged Restorations

A filling, crown, or other restoration that comes loose or falls out leaves the tooth underneath exposed.

Swelling or Suspected Infection

Swelling in the gums, face, or jaw can signal an infection that needs prompt attention.

Dental Trauma

A blow to the mouth or face — from a fall, sports, or an accident — warrants a call even if damage isn't obvious.

Knocked-Out Permanent Teeth

Time matters. Call us right away if a permanent tooth has been knocked out.

When to Call 911 or Go to an Emergency Room Instead

Some situations need medical care first.

A dental emergency is different from a medical emergency. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room instead of calling our office if you're experiencing:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Significant facial trauma
  • Rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, particularly toward the eye or throat

Our office provides dental care — situations like these require emergency medical services first.

What to Do While You Wait

A few responsible steps, not a treatment plan.

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown (the chewing surface, not the root) and avoid scrubbing or drying it. For pain, over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed can help in the short term. A broken or cracked tooth is worth protecting from further damage — avoid chewing on that side until you're seen. None of this replaces an evaluation — call us and we'll guide you from there.

Don't Wait on Dental Pain

Dental problems rarely resolve on their own.

Early evaluation typically leads to simpler treatment and a better outcome than waiting for a problem to get worse. That's the same thinking behind comprehensive care at Campo Dentistry — address issues while they're still straightforward to treat.
